Snowshed

Snowsheds are avalanche control structures.

Sliding snow is directed over the roof to the valley side.

Snowsheds have several objectives. They protect vehicle and pedestrian traffic from avalanches. They prevent avalanches from entering the roadway.

And they serve as a shelters to protect vehicles and pedestrians at times of extreme snowfall.

The three main structural materials are reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and steel.

Avalanche control fence

"Avalanche control fence" is the general name for an avalanche control measures that involves a fence.

Structures to prevent snow from sliding by supporting it are installed on the mountain side of a road.

These snow fences block winds blowing up the mountain slope. The first such snow fence was installed at Nakayama Pass on Route 230 in 1978.
